Well-developed data centers of FGMA SNI ITT "Informika" are located in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The servers and RUNNet’s networking are installed and maintained there both for RUNNet’s needs and for scientific and educational Internet projects. RUNNet provides access to the official websites of educational authorities, federal educational resources, websites of universities and their units, research institutes, educational organizations of various levels, etc.

RUNNet provides users with access to information systems of federal and regional levels, electronic educational and scientific and educational resources, learning management systems, electronic libraries and storages of large amounts of scientific and educational data. RUNNet’s specialists take an active part in approbation, testing and implementation of new information and communication technologies and services.

Cloud technologies and services

RUNNet is implementing a project to approbate and operate its own cloud computing infrastructure. The cloud is based on the rapidly developing open source software OpenStack , which is a multifunctional cloud platform in the form of a set of technological projects, oriented on the creation of computing clouds and cloud data stores of private and public levels.

The RUNNet cloud polygon includes 12 server nodes with a total peak performance of about 3 TFlops. Several dozens of virtual machines running in the cloud are providing the operation of the RUNNet-DNS network services, hosting educational websites, scanning e-mail for spam and viruses, supporting IP telephony services, service of webinars, services of gathering and processing of network statistics, monitoring of network operation and network services, etc.

Using different variations of cloud services is very relevant and promising for solving a wide range of tasks - from virtualization of the infrastructure (IaaS) to the provision of "rental" software (SaaS).

Developed cloud platforms allow educational and scientific organizations:

  • ensure reliable storage and efficient work with large amounts of data
  • access to additional computing power and expensive software for scientific and educational purposes
  • deploy LMS in the cloud
  • organize remote access of teachers, students and researchers to virtual machines created on demand for laboratory work, scientific calculations, etc.
VoIP technologies and services

The project to deploy and improve the system of corporate and inter-university IP telephony is being implemented in the RUNNet network since 2012. VoIP-service is based on the software solution with open source Asterisk, which is installed on CentOS. Users of IP-telephony can make external calls to public telephone networks and use additional functionality of corporate IP-PBX, including - video calls, audio and video conferences, voice mail, various types of transferring calls, intercepting and holding calls etc. Calls can be made both from stationary devices and from mobile devices using specialized client programs.

Internal calls between network users are made in short four-digit numbers and are not charged. The base of subscribers of the VoIP network exceeds 500 people, including the staff of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, FGMA SNI ITT "Informika", and also connected to the network of universities.

Web-based services for data storage and collaboration

The Web Service deployed and actively used by the employees of the FGMA SNI ITT "Informika" and the staff of the RUNNet network is based on the open source OwnCloud and allows to solve the following tasks:

  • Cloud storage, transparent access and data synchronization (WebDAV, desktop and mobile clients)
  • Sharing data stored in the cloud, working with documents (based on the OnlyOffice application)
  • Maintain public and private calendars (CalDAV)
  • Storing and synchronizing contacts in the address book (CardDAV)  

 

 

Webinar Services

Webinar Service RUNNet is open and free for of all users of the network and is oriented to use for scientific and educational purposes. The system allows organizing and conducting an on-line network video conference, within the framework of which the following opportunities are provided:

  • Connect to a video and voice conference using a local webcam and microphone (support for multiple audio tracks and video sharing)
  • virtual board (whiteboard) for downloading and displaying presentations, office documents formats Microsoft Office and LibreOffice / OpenOffice, images, PDF files
  • support for advanced features of the virtual board (index, scaling, drawing tools, text management, desktop access)
  • feedback facilities for videoconference participants (public and private chat rooms)
  • role-based access to the videoconference as a viewer or moderator in charge of the event
  • video conferencing window layout controls

The service is based on the GNU software BigBlueButton as a web service.

Tools for network status monitoring and traffic analyzing

The RUNNet network management center maintains an up-to-date database of users, provides access to service information and to services for technical and administrative network staff, including monitoring the operation of the network, the statistics of channels usage and other necessary information. Monitoring of the status of the network devices and communication channels is carried out using the GNU software platform Cacti, responsible for the collection and analysis of statistical data on network traffic and a permanent monitoring of the devices. RUNNet deploys and operates an effective system for detection and prevention of DDoS attacks, services are provided for measuring the bandwidth of data transmission channels.

Rapid monitoring of server equipment and monitoring of the status of RUNNet network services with information about incidents for network's administrators is implemented on the basis of Zabbix system.

Traditional network services are deployed and supported in the RUNNet network - e-mail servers, web hosting, DNS (storage of zones, resolving, content filtering), NTP, etc.
